Quilt for BFF

I am working on a quilt for my BFF. She lives in Austin and since I moved to Houston I actually live close enough to visit her. Her Birthday is the 7th of July and I am driving up to spend a few days and celebrate with her! I am so excited it has been too long since we got to spend time together. We are going to have a wonderful time doing girly things…SPA DAY with massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials.

Here is a preview of what I am working on. I am making 1 for her and 1 for me (just alike)…

I purchased a sheet in the color of the dark taupe (it was as close as I could find without spending $50 backing the thing). I also decided to go that way because I am making 2. Hubby would have a heart attack if I asked for $100 to back the quilts al lat once :)

I think I am going to go to the LQS to and get the binding. I was thinking one of the reds…What do you think?

I had a very difficult time laying this quilt out. it took me about 4 hours arranging and rearranging. Finally I got to this point which I found somewhat pleasing.

QUESTION: Tell me what you use to back your quilts.

I've used a variety of things...sheets, minkee, flannel, quilters cotton, etc. sort of just depends on what the quilt is, how I envision it being used...how broke I am at the time :)

I have been thinking of using sheets, the darn fabric to back quilts cost me a fortune.....I know they guy at the LQS tries to tell me not to do it, but he just wants to see me more fabric!!! I love this quilt, so pretty!!

I try and use what I have (solids, left overs of the material I used to make the quilt), but if I can get a good deal on yardage that coordinates, I back it in what I used on the front. As for the binding, I would probably go with the blue, but that's just because I love blue. I think the red will pop and look great and I think the blue is softer and more feminine like the fabric. Your quilt, your choice! :)

I back my quilting in fabric, but have bought a few sheets to use, we will see how that turns out. I would bind in red or pink. Pink for a soft look, red for a more dramatic.

Flannel if its a cuddle quilt. Sheets are always good. I usually try to use my leftovers from the front somehow and add it to the back....but flannel is my cheapest happiest quilt backing. I used Polar Fleece for Jimmys and I will have to show you how fricken warm that puppy is!
And I think its so cute you are making one for both of you so every time you cuddle in it you will think of each other.
and I would use red or blue for binding.

Love the quilt! I used sheets for years to back my quilts. Lately I've been buying fabric as they've been lap size quilts and it's not too expensive. And it's always fun to piece the backing from your stash if you can! :0)

Sheets are my favorite, since they are relatiely cheap (compared to yards of fabric), plus they wash really well. I always put a patchwork stripe of leftover fabric from the front just to add some interest and break up the solid backing a bit.

Rene,
Those are really going to be pretty. Backing them with sheets is a "great" idea also. Then, your binding will surely make all of those beautiful fabrics "pop". So thoughtful of you, Rene. Such great memories you are creating with making the two quilts. Don't forget to sign and date them. I hope you and your friend will have a great time, my dear friend.
Happy Quilting!

the quilts are lovely! i generally use either coordinating solid or print yardage, and lately i've been piecing my backs, which gives me more leeway in that i can combine smaller pieces from my stash. the next time i make a larger quilt, i'm thinking i'll use an IKEA sheet.

have fun on your spa day! it sounds lovely!

I really like to use Kona solids for the back of my quilts. I love the color options, the weight of the fabric, and that I can get it cheaper than designer prints.
